Structural Analysis and Optimization of Elevated Intze Water Tank for Enhanced Stability and Durability

ABSTRACT

The demand for water has become increasingly critical due to the rapid rise in population, leading to potential water scarcity. To address this challenge, the storage of water has become a necessity, requiring the construction of reliable water tanks to help communities manage water crises effectively. Among various tank designs, the Intze water tank stands out for its structural efficiency and suitability for largescale storage. The design and analysis of such tanks involve addressing multiple factors, including their capacity, wall height, hopper height, and bottom dome diameter. These parameters are carefully optimized to ensure the tank’s durability and functionality. Modern engineering tools, such as SAP 2000 analysis software, enable precise modeling and assessment of water tanks under various load conditions. The analysis adheres to Indian Standard Codes, accounting for critical loads like dead load, hydrostatic load, wind, earthquake, and time history effects to design tanks capable of withstanding worstcase scenarios.

Structural integrity and resilience are essential for water tanks, as they are subjected to diverse loading conditions and environmental stresses throughout their lifespan. This study not only focuses on the structural parameters but also emphasizes evaluating deformation, bending stresses, base shear, and base moments, which are critical for ensuring the tank’s safety and reliability. Resonance, a vital aspect in elevated structures, is also considered, as it can amplify dynamic loads and lead to structural instability if not addressed. To mitigate this, modal analysis is performed to determine the natural frequencies of the tank, ensuring it operates safely under all conditions. The findings from this work provide valuable insights for structural engineers to design and construct efficient, longlasting water tanks that meet the growing demands for water storage in a sustainable manner.
